Bush's 9/11 Speech
Last night, President Bush gave a speech to the nation on the fifth anniversary of 9/11. In his own twisted way, the speech dealt with 9/11.
Bush started the speech with a few words regarding the fifth anniversary and he ended right where he began. But, it was the 15 minutes in-between that drifted away from the topic of 9/11.
President Bush and members of his administration have flip-flopped back and forth when it comes to the War in Iraq and if it's a part of the War on Terror. They've also flip-flopped on the reasons why we invaded Iraq. Not long ago, Bush himself stated that the War in Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks. It was recently documented that there was no pre-war intelligence suggesting a link between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda or Iraq and al-Qaeda. Directly following these reports, Dick Cheney claimed that there were and are links between Iraq and al-Qaeda.
Last night, Bush spoke about Iraq and Bin Laden for 15 of the 17 minutes and how if we didn't win the war in Iraq, then our children would be in danger of being nuked by Iraqis. The guy went on and on attempting to infiltrate fear in United States' citizens. He claimed that the "terrorists" feared freedom, the freedoms we hold as citizens of this country, and yet he claimed that we must be unified on our views and support for this war. Again, he claims to support freedom, but disapproves of those who use it.
President Bush has repeatedly attempted to use the 9/11 attacks to the fullest advantage by provoking fear and in turn, increasing his approval. This was the capper to his recent swing of speeches meant to increase support for the war and increase Republicans chances in the November elections.
From what I heard, President Bush just did what he always seems to do when times are tough (especially around election time) and used 9/11 to further attempt to provoke fear in Americans in hope that his numbers will be boosted and Republicans will retain control of the House and the Senate. Hopefully, his latest fear campaign doesn't work this time as it did for the '04 (s)election. Only time will tell. In the meantime, he may want to watch his speech from last night and watch Pat Robertson's "700 Club" and see the eerie similarities in their appearance and speech. I had to look back and forth a few times to make sure it was Bush who was speaking. Remember, it was Robertson who Bush told that there would be no casualties in Iraq. It still amazes me that this guy has been president for going on six years.
