Bush's Approval Rating By State
I found this poll rather humorous. It was released on April 18th, so, almost a month ago, when Bush's approval rating was at 36%. Since then, polls have shown a dip in those numbers: 32% (CNN), 33% (Fox News), and 33% (CBS). So, what I'm going to do is subtract three percentage points from each state to make it more current.
Including the subtraction, only three states hold a 50% or higher approval rating of Bush. Can anyone guess these states? Nope, not Nebraska. They place 4th on the list at 48%. Utah ranks 1st at 52%, followed by Wyoming at 51%, and Idaho at 50%. These four states all went to Bush in the '04 election. In fact, the top 22 states listed went to Bush in the '04 election, but the numbers are not impressive, to say the least. Oklahoma rounds out the top five with a 45% approval rating. Alaska follows at 44%, and Kansas at 43%. Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas are all tied at 42%. Mississippi's approval of Bush is at 41%. Arizona, Georgia, and North Dakota are all tied at 40%. Tennessee and South Dakota follow at 39% and 38%. Indiana and Montana are tied at #17 with approval ratings of 37%. To round out the top 22 are: Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia, all with approval ratings of 36%. Then comes the first state on the list that voted for Kerry in '04, Wisconsin, with an approval rating of 36%. Up next are Arkansas and Washington, both at 35%. Arkansas went to Bush in '04, while Washington went to Kerry. Florida, Oregon, and Virginia tie for the 26th spot at 34%. Florida and Virginia went red in '04 and Oregon was blue. Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, and New Hampshire are tied for the 29th slot, all at 33%. Colorado and Missouri voted for Bush in '04, while Minnesota and New Hampshire voted Kerry. New Mexico's approval rating of Bush is at 32%. Hawaii, Iowa, Nevada, and Ohio are tied with an approval rating of 31%. Hawaii was the lone state here that went for Kerry in '04. Iowa, Nevada, and Ohio voted Bush. The rest of the states on the list voted Kerry in '04. Michigan's approval rating is at 29%. Maine and Maryland are tied at #39 with an approval rating of 28%. California and Pennsylvania are knotted with an approval rating of 27%. Illinois approves of Bush at only a 26% clip. New Jersey approves even less of him, at 25%. Connecticut, Delaware, and Vermont approve of Bush at a 24% clip. Massachusetts has an approval rating of 23%. New York and Rhode Island complete the poll, with only 21% of their residents approving of the president.
To put this in perspective, I just calculated all the percentages, even with the subtracted three points to each number, and it comes out to a combined approval rating of 34.8%. So, even for how ugly the numbers look up above, they're even worse right now! I'd have to subtract even more from each number in order to be more accurate with his current approval rating.
