Was America Ready?

Well, I was certainly wrong about the new film "United 93" breaking any records this past weekend. In fact, it placed second, behind the new Robin Williams flick, "RV," and just ahead of the new gymnastics film, entitled "Stick It."

1. "RV"- 16.4 million
2. "United 93"- 11.5 million
3. "Stick It"- 10.8 million
4. "Silent Hill"- 9.3 million
5. "Scary Movie 4"- 7.8 million

If you work out the equation 11.5 million divided by 8.50 (ticket price), it comes out to 1,352,941 people who saw the film over the weekend. Divide that over 50 (number of states in the country) and that comes out to 27,059 people that viewed the film per state.

Was the country ready? The numbers certainly don't suggest that. It may also have to do with A&E's recent film, entitled "Flight 93." A&E set a record the first night that film aired and from articles I've read, that film is considered to be the more credible of the two. Why go and see "United 93" when one's already seen "Flight 93?" Oddly enough, I saw that "Flight 93" aired off and on all weekend during the opening of "United 93." It'll be interesting to see how it fares in its second weekend, as "Mission: Impossible III" opens nationwide.
