The Press Odd About Oklahoma

Oklahoma Sooners' starting quarterback Rhett Bomar was dismissed from the team just yesterday and the press have gone from claiming that OU had a chance to win the National Championship to basically saying they're done.

I'm very confused by all this. Who is Rhett Bomar? He's no Jay Cutler. No Matt Leinart. No Vince Young. No Chris Leak. No Drew Tate. No Brady Quinn. Okay, you get the point. Why did Oklahoma struggle offensively last year at times? Especially when tailback Adrian Peterson was banged up with the ankle injury? Their lack of a passing game. Bomar was anything but consistent last year. So, what, did Bomar have the greatest off-season known to man? Did he go from being Rhett Bomar to being Peyton Manning? I highly doubt that. With or without Bomar, OU's passing game is going to be anything but spectacular. Their strength will be in halfback Adrian Peterson. If he goes down with an injury, the offense will struggle. I don't care who's at quarterback.

I had a hard time believing OU would be a national title contender this year for the simple fact that they didn't have any balance in their offense and depended too heavily on Peterson. Lucky for them, they play in the mediocre Big XII conference who will be rebuilding this year.

If Oklahoma is going to win this year, they'll win based on solid defense, good blocking up front, and Adrian Peterson. That'll be their winning formula. With Bomar in or out of the lineup, it doesn't effect this winning recipe. With him in or out of the lineup, the winning formula should be good for several wins, but I can't see it being good enough to win or even be in contention for the national title. If Florida lost Chris Leak or Notre Dame lost Brady Quinn, then I could see the media's point, but not with Rhett Bomar of Oklahoma.
