San Diego too hot?

I got into a discussion with a friend of mine the other day regarding San Diego weather. I've been there once, last summer in fact, and it was gorgeous every day. The sun shined every day we were there. The temperature was in the upper 70s to middle 80s every day and there was little to no humidity during our stay. Was I surprised? No. I took a physical geography course a few years ago and the teacher showed us some graphs of different cities, comparing the average temperatures per month in those cities. I remember San Diego's being steady, mild, and beautiful. Comedian Lewis Black even has a joke about the weather in San Diego. He said something along these lines, "The easiest job in the world? Being a meteorologist in San Diego.

'So, how's the weather looking this week, Mike?'

'Nice, back to you, Steve'."

A friend of mine, who was to attend a wedding in San Diego this past weekend, complained that it's always "so hot" there. I attempted to shed some light on the weather there and he tried to make an argument out of it, "Well, it's always been hot when I've been there."

So, I looked up some statistics via weatherchannel.com and here's what I found. Just as I remember in my physical geography course, the average temperatures in San Diego are steady, mild, and beautiful.

The peak average high in San Diego? Take a guess. Come on! 78 degrees in August! The valley high? 66 degrees, in the months of December, January, February, and March. From there, it averages out to be 69 in April and May, 72 in June, 76 in July, 77 in September, 74 in October, and 70 in November. The average high for the year? Just under 71 degrees. Even the lows are pleasant. The peak is again in August, where the average low is 67 degrees. The valley low this time comes in December, where the average temperature is 49 degrees. From there, it averages out to be 50 in January, 52 in February, 54 in March, 56 in April, 60 in May, 63 in June, 66 in July, 66 in September, 61 in October, and 54 in November. The average low for the year? Just slightly above 58 degrees. There you have it. The range of average highs is 12 degrees for the year and the range of average lows is at 15 degrees. For the year, it has an average high of 71 and low of 58.

I'm sorry, but is that "too hot"? That's flipping ridiculous. 71 degrees, sunny, with little to no humidity during the day and cooling off to 58 at night? Yet, here in Nebraska, it commonly reaches the 90 to 100 degree mark in the summertime, with 40-60% humidity and a heat index well above 100 degrees. In the winter, with wind chill, temperatures can commonly reach below zero temperatures. How someone in Nebraska can complain about San Diego weather is beyond me. Weather wise, that place is what I picture heaven to be like. Nebraska? More like the direct opposite.
