Far Righties Are Still Talking...
I just read an article which wrote about actor Ben Affleck's comments on the Bill Maher show regarding President Bush and the declassifying of information in the Valerie Plame leak case. Affleck stated that what Bush did was treasonous and that he could be hung for it. In other words, he contented that Bush could be executed via hanging for what he did. Following the article were comments posted by a group of hard-core righties. I read every single comment. I had to laugh at a few of them, but comments just don't bother me anymore, no matter how asinine they may be.
Let me first comment on Affleck's statements. As Webster defines treason, it is the "violation of allegiance toward one's country." There will need to be further investigations in this case in order to establish if Bush's behavior was "treasonous." The actual leaker of Valerie Plame's name is not known yet. Could it have been Bush? Yes, but it could also have been others. I would not go as far as Affleck did in his statements just yet, but in due time, we will see how accurate they were. As for the other comment, I'll say that for what all we've discovered over the past couple years regarding Bush and his administration and the more we will continue to learn, I would say that Bush will be hung, from a political standpoint, as in being impeached. But, execution? Let's not go that far.
Okay, now on to the fun portion of the blog. I don't know how many times I read these people commenting on how bad of an actor Affleck is. They'd attack him with, "What was his last good movie?" or "He was horrible in 'Giglia!' That's what ruined his career right there!" He was called many names, such as a hippy, tree hugger, liberal, liberalist, left-leaning, fanatical lefty, fanatical liberal, far lefty, radical lefty, radical liberal, crazy lefty, crazy liberal, ignorant lefty, idiots, ignorant liberal, stupid lefty, stupid liberal....you get the idea. Some went on rants about Hollywood stars and celebrities and how they're all stupid liberals, except for a select few, and that all of them should keep their mouths shut. Others stated that it was good for Affleck to say these things, because it will give people more reason to vote Republican in November. One person said that Ben Affleck and George Clooney should star alongside one another in "Brokeback Mountain 2." Many claimed that Affleck and other starts are merely stars, know nothing about politics, so why should anyone listen to them or take them seriously? They're paid to be the stars they are and that's it. We don't pay them to shove political commentary down our throats. Only one person in the whole group questioned why they were saying such things and he or she did this in a very eloquent manner. What was the rest of the group's response? "That was a very intelligent comment. So, what are you? A hippy? A tree hugger? A lefty? What are you trying to do by showing up in here, huh?"
It was an amusing, yet sad read. Why are people like that so close-minded and hypocritical? They remind me of the people who light up a cigarette, and as they're smoking, make a comment like, "Anyone who smokes is an idiot." They go on and on about how celebrities shouldn't talk politics, shove political commentary down people's throats, and how they know nothing about politics, so they don't have the right to talk about it. So, what are these people's credentials? What makes their commentary so much more intelligent and worthwhile than celebrities'? Why is allright for them to let their political beliefs be known, but not Hollywood stars'? They also went off about Affleck's statement regarding treason, claiming that Affleck obviously didn't know the definition. Perhaps, they don't know the definition. Like I wrote earlier, treason is the "violation of allegiance toward one's country." If Bush is found to have leaked the name for personal reasons to help wage a war in the middle east, isn't that putting oneself over one's country, and in essence, being disloyal? If it is discovered that Bush exaggerated the claims he made regarding Iraq's danger and going for a completely different set of reasons to benefit him, isn't that disloyal? Since we have yet to find weapons of mass destruction or any solid links between Iraq and Al-Qaeda, doesn't that make Bush disloyal, for lying us into a war?
While Affleck may be jumping the gun a bit on the Plame investigation, he's right about Bush having been treasonous during his tenure. He has been disloyal to this country. He has put us in harm's way, when it wasn't necessary. He has put himself over his country. He has not represented the people at large. He's represented a very small percentage of people who he knows personally and who make a lot of money. Bush has put himself above the flag, above the Bill of Rights, above the Constitution, above the judicial system, and above the law. Bush once told the people that "If you're not with us, you're against us." If anyone dared question him, he thought of them as treasonous. That's very ironic, because he's been more disloyal to our country than any protester or Hollywood star could think of being.
Am I into politics? Am I a senator? A newspaper columnist? A political analyst? No, but I'm an American citizen and have the freedom to speak. Regardless if some like our views or not, we have that freedom and will continue to so long as we utilize it.
P.S.- The highest approval rating I've seen for Bush is 36%, so those bloggers on that other site better start making clones if they want Republicans to continue controlling both the House and the Senate. A few words from an actor's mouth isn't going to do the trick.
