"Mission" (Not) Accomplished
Allright, so it was accomplished when it comes to "Mission: Impossible 3" this past weekend, but not for "United 93." After placing second in its debut weekend a week ago, the film dropped three spots to number five:
1. "Mission: Impossible 3"- 48.0 million
2. "R.V."- 11.1 million
3. "An American Haunting"- 6.4 million
4. "Stick It"- 5.5 million
5. "United 93"- 5.2 million
So, in two weekends, it has grossed 16.7 million. That's not nearly as strong of a showing as I thought it'd make.
"United 93" is the critics' favorite thus far in '06 amongst dramas, but as is the case with many, the people don't care what the critics have to say.
Some will claim that it being in the top five for two consecutive weekends is proof that America was ready for this film. America was more ready for "R.V.," which has pulled in over 27 million in its first two weekends and "Mission: Impossible 3" in its opening weekend than "United 93." "Fahrenheit 9/11" made over $100 million at the box office in a limited number of theaters. Compare that to 16.7 million in two weekends in countless more theaters.
