Jon Stewart Lays the Smack Down on Bill Bennett
This is not to be taken literally. Stewart didn't just up and pounce away on Bennett, with a few jabs, uppercuts, and a Tyson-like biting of the ear. No, but Bennett was a guest on "The Daily Show" Tuesday evening and it might be a while before Bennett shows up to the set again.
Bennett was there to promote a new book of his, called "America: The Last Great Hope." From what I could gather, it's about how America is the last hope to spread freedom and democracy. From this alone, I think it's safe to assume that Mr. Bennett is more of a Bush supporter than the majority (especially myself).
Stewart began the conversation by bringing up the gay marriage ban issue and asking if it was hypocritical in any sense to claim that we're the free country for others to look up to, but are, at the same time, saying gays cannot be married. This would be the topic of their conversation from start to finish. They didn't even get to the details or specifics about Bennett's book.
Bennett went on the slippery slope, like some tend to do when bringing up the gay marriage issue. Some may even go as far as to say, "What's next? We can marry animals?" He went on by comparing gay marriage to polygamy.
It was obvious from the outset where both men stood on the issue and neither budged an inch. However, it was also obvious that Stewart knew exactly what he was talking about, answering all the questions posed for him very thoroughly and Bennett used irrational reasoning (ALA slippery slopes) to justify his position.
Bennett said he saw gay marriage like polygamy, because he doesn't believe either are part of any human condition, to which Stewart disagreed, saying something along the lines of, "It's not like men are born and say, gosh, I need fourteen wives to satisfy my every need. That is a choice. Homosexuality is not a choice. It's not some weird fetish. It's a part of the human condition," to which the audience applauded heavily.
That wasn't the first or last time such a thing occurred. During the talk, it seemed that after everything Bennett stated, one or two people clapped and after Stewart spoke, the whole audience stood, cheered, and applauded.
Stewart had his game face on tonight and was brilliant. I can only wonder if Bennett will ever make his face known again with another guest appearance on the show. His appearance and chat with Stewart did anything but serve as good publicity for his book. A word of advice for Billy, you might want to appear on shows such with hosts such as Rush Limbaugh, James Dobson, Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilly, as opposed to ones hosted by Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert.
This show will be aired again on Wednesday, in case any of you missed it. If you want to see Stewart at the top of his game or just want to see someone who's anti-gay get beaten down with intelligent questioning and logical reasoning, then you won't want to miss this!
