Lieberman Defeat Sends Warning To Pro-War Democrats

Connecticut Democratic Senator and Neo-Conservative favorite amongst Democrats, Joe Lieberman, was ousted by the anti-war Ned Lamont in the state's primaries. Not much is known about Lamont by the majority of Americans, which should frighten pro-war Democrats even more, including potential presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Along with Lieberman, Clinton has been the Democrat most supportive of the Iraqi War.

Lieberman seems determined to run as an Independent in the November elections. It'll be interesting to see if the overwhelmingly Democratic state of Connecticut will up the support for Lamont or if Lieberman can win the support of conservative Democrats and Independents. It'll also be interesting to see what percentage of conservatives vote for the Republican candidate compared to Lieberman, because the vast majority of liberals in the state will most likely vote for Lamont.

The Democrats of Connecticut have spoken. It'll only be a matter of time before we see if the Democratic leaders follow suit. The majority of the Democratic leaders have been tentative (that's even an understatement) to distance themselves from the Republicans on their war stance, from fear that they'll be bashed by the right as being "unpatriotic," "Anti-American" and unconcerned about the safety and security of the American people. So, what have they done? Shut their mouths and follow the conservatives wherever they go (or speak, in this case). With Lamont's primary victory over the pro-war Lieberman, it'll be interesting to see if more Democrats will be less hesitant on speaking out against the war and on setting a timetable for the troops to return home. Lamont is only one guy, so I won't believe the movement until I see it for myself, but he is a start to that movement, a start that the Neo-Conservatives never wanted to see.
